Dental Patient Reviews

Jaw pain that gets worse when you chew, a clicking or popping sound when you open your mouth, headaches that start near your temples, or stiffness that makes it hard to open wide in the morning. These symptoms often point to a problem with the temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your lower jaw to the base of your skull on each side.

Foothills Family Dentistry has been treating TMJ and TMD cases in Tucson since 1984. We start with imaging and a bite analysis to identify what is driving the pain, whether that is clenching, a misaligned bite, disc displacement, or joint inflammation. Treatment ranges from custom splints and Botox to surgical correction for severe cases. Everything is handled in one office.

TMJ Treatments We Offer

Jaw pain has different causes, and the treatment that works depends on where the problem is coming from. Muscle tension, joint damage, bite imbalance, and disc displacement all require different approaches. Patients from Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley, Marana, and the east side come to our office for the full range of TMJ and TMD care.

Our Tooth Extraction Services & Options

Custom Nightguards and Occlusal Splints

Clenching and grinding during sleep put repeated pressure on the temporomandibular joint and wear down the teeth over time. A custom nightguard or occlusal splint separates the upper and lower teeth, absorbs the force, and reduces strain on the joint and surrounding muscles.

We take impressions of your teeth and have the device fabricated in a dental lab for a precise fit. Repositioning splints are used for more complex cases where the jaw needs to be guided into a healthier resting position over several months.

Occlusal Adjustment

An uneven bite forces the jaw to shift during chewing, creating stress on one side of the joint. Occlusal adjustment reshapes specific contact points on your teeth so the bite distributes force evenly across both sides.

Our team use articulating paper and digital bite analysis to identify the high spots causing interference. The adjustment is done in small increments over one or more visits until the bite feels balanced and the jaw tracks smoothly.

Jaw Exercises and Physical Therapy

Targeted jaw exercises stretch and retrain the muscles around the temporomandibular joint. Controlled opening, lateral movements, and resistance exercises help restore range of motion and reduce muscle guarding.

We include a home exercise program as part of your treatment plan. For patients with significant muscle involvement, we may also recommend TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) or ultrasound therapy to relax the muscles and reduce inflammation.

Masseter Botox for TMJ and Jaw Clenching

Botox injections into the masseter muscle reduce the force of clenching by relaxing overactive muscle fibres. The masseter is the primary muscle responsible for jaw closing, and chronic contraction drives joint compression and pain.

Each session takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Results appear within 5 to 10 days and last 3 to 4 months. Botox for TMJ is not FDA-approved for this use but has shown strong clinical results in reducing pain and muscle tension.

Corticosteroid and Anti-Inflammatory Injections

When the temporomandibular joint itself is inflamed, a corticosteroid injection delivered directly into the joint space can reduce swelling and pain quickly. This targets the source rather than masking symptoms with oral medication.

Joint injections are used for acute flare-ups or when oral anti-inflammatories have not provided enough relief. The effect can last several weeks to a few months. We evaluate how the joint responds before recommending repeat injections.

Medication for Acute TMJ Symptoms

Short-term medication can help break the cycle of pain, inflammation, and muscle spasm during a TMJ flare. Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce swelling in and around the joint. Muscle relaxants ease tension in the jaw, neck, and facial muscles.

We prescribe medication for days to weeks, not as a long-term solution. The goal is to calm the area enough for splint therapy, exercises, and other treatments to take effect.

Sleep Apnea and TMJ Treatment

TMJ disorders and obstructive sleep apnea share overlapping symptoms and often occur together. Patients with sleep apnea clench harder during sleep as the airway narrows, which increases joint strain. Treating one condition without addressing the other leads to incomplete relief.

We screen for both conditions during your evaluation. Custom oral appliances can be designed to manage jaw position and airway support at the same time, reducing both clenching force and breathing obstruction.

Surgical TMJ Treatment

When conservative treatments have not improved symptoms after several months, surgical options may be considered. Arthrocentesis flushes the joint space with sterile fluid to remove inflammatory debris and break up adhesions. TMJ arthroscopy uses a small camera inserted into the joint to diagnose and treat internal problems like disc displacement.

For more advanced structural damage, modified condylotomy or open joint surgery may be needed. We evaluate imaging, symptom history, and response to prior treatment before recommending surgery.

When TMJ Treatment Is Needed

TMJ disorders do not always start with obvious symptoms. You might notice jaw stiffness in the morning, a dull ache near your ear, teeth grinding marks on your enamel, or a clicking sound that comes and goes. Over time these symptoms can worsen into locked jaw, chronic headaches, neck pain, or an inability to open your mouth wide.

If you are experiencing any combination of jaw pain when chewing, ear pain without an ear infection, facial soreness, or teeth that no longer fit together the way they used to, schedule an evaluation. Early treatment with a splint or exercises can prevent the condition from progressing to a point where surgery becomes necessary.

What to Expect During TMJ Treatment

Your first visit includes a detailed exam of the jaw joint, muscles, and bite. We check your range of motion, listen for joint sounds, palpate the muscles for tenderness, and may take X-rays or a CBCT scan to evaluate the bone and disc position. A bite analysis identifies uneven contact points that may be contributing to joint stress.

Based on the findings, we build a treatment plan that may start with a custom splint and exercises, then add Botox or medication if needed. Most patients see significant improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent splint use. Follow-up visits track your progress and adjust the splint as your bite and muscle tension change.

TMJ Treatment Cost in Tucson

A custom nightguard or occlusal splint in Tucson costs $300 to $800. Advanced repositioning splints for complex TMD cases range from $1,000 to $2,500. Masseter Botox for jaw clenching runs $300 to $800 per session and needs to be repeated every 3 to 4 months. Corticosteroid joint injections cost $150 to $400 per session.

Occlusal adjustment ranges from $100 to $500 based on how many teeth need reshaping. Arthrocentesis costs $500 to $1,500. TMJ arthroscopy ranges from $3,000 to $10,000 for more complex cases.

Dental insurance often covers nightguards and splints when bruxism is documented. Botox for TMJ is typically billed through medical insurance, though coverage varies. If you are unsure about your benefits, bring your plan details to your appointment, and we will check what applies from our accepted providers list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does TMJ treatment cost in Tucson?

A custom nightguard costs $300 to $800. Botox for TMJ ranges from $300 to $800 per session. Advanced splints and surgical options cost more based on complexity. Foothills Family Dentistry provides a full cost breakdown after evaluating your jaw and symptoms.

Is TMJ treatment painful?

Most TMJ treatments are non-invasive and cause little to no discomfort. Botox injections feel like a small pinch and take about 15 minutes. Splint therapy and exercises are pain-free. Surgical procedures are performed under sedation with post-operative medication to manage recovery.

How long does TMJ treatment take to work?

Most patients notice improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent splint use. Botox results appear within 5 to 10 days. Jaw exercises produce gradual improvement over several weeks. Severe cases requiring surgical intervention have a longer recovery timeline.

Can TMJ go away on its own?

Mild cases triggered by temporary stress or a short period of clenching may resolve with rest, soft foods, and jaw awareness. TMJ caused by bite imbalance, disc displacement, or chronic bruxism does not self-correct and usually worsens without treatment.

Does Botox help with TMJ jaw pain?

Botox relaxes the masseter muscle and reduces the force of clenching, which lowers pressure on the joint. Results last 3 to 4 months per session. It is most effective for patients whose TMJ pain is driven primarily by muscle overuse and clenching habits.

Can teeth grinding cause TMJ?

Yes. Bruxism is one of the most common causes of TMJ disorders. The constant grinding and clenching force overworks the jaw muscles and compresses the joint. A custom nightguard protects the teeth and reduces the load on the joint during sleep.

Does insurance cover TMJ treatment?

Dental insurance often covers custom nightguards and splints when bruxism is documented as medically necessary. Medical insurance may cover Botox, physical therapy, and surgical procedures. Coverage varies by plan, so bring your plan details and we will check what applies.
