Scaling & Root Planning Services in Tucson AZ - Foothills Family Dentistry

Dental Patient Reviews

If your gums bleed when you brush, feel sore longer than they should, or your breath never really feels fresh, the problem is often below the gumline. You can brush and floss consistently and still see these signs when hardened buildup collects where toothbrush bristles cannot reach.

Scaling and root planing treats gum infection by removing bacteria and calculus from below the gumline and smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth. At Foothills Family Dentistry, Kyle Scott performs this deep cleaning in-office to calm inflammation, allow the gums to tighten again, and protect the bone that supports your teeth.

Our Scaling and Root Planing Services in Tucson

Not every cleaning addresses the same problem. A routine cleaning removes surface plaque. Scaling and root planing address infection that lives deeper, under the gums, where it continues to irritate tissue and weaken support.

When bacteria and hardened deposits stay trapped below the gumline, gum pockets deepen and become harder to keep clean at home. Scaling and root planing remove what is driving that irritation, so healing can begin.

Our Teeth Scaling Services & Options

Dental Scaling and Polishing

Dental scaling removes plaque and hardened buildup from the tooth surface and the shallow area just under the gums. Polishing follows to smooth the enamel, which slows down how quickly bacteria collect again.

If inflammation is mild and gum pockets remain shallow, scaling and polishing may be enough to keep your gums stable.

Root Planing Dental Treatment

Root planing cleans the root surfaces of your teeth below the gumline. These areas often feel rough when calculus has been present for a long time.

Smoothing the roots reduces places where bacteria cling and allows the gums to sit closer to the tooth again. This step plays a major role in reducing irritation and bleeding after treatment.

Deep Cleaning for Gum Disease

When infection moves deeper under the gums, regular cleanings no longer reach the source. Deep cleaning removes buildup from below the gumline and treats the root surfaces directly.

This treatment is often completed in sections of the mouth so each area receives full attention without overwhelming the gums all at once.

Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

Periodontal scaling and root planing are used to control active gum infection and protect the structures that keep your teeth stable. This service focuses on reducing pocket depth and slowing damage to the bone around the teeth.

At Foothills Family Dentistry, this treatment is performed as part of in-office periodontal care, with progress checked through follow-up visits based on how your gums respond.

Scaling and Root Planing for Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. Gums bleed easily, stay irritated, and may look swollen, but the damage has not yet become permanent.

Scaling and root planing removes the irritants causing that inflammation and helps reverse the condition before it progresses deeper.

Ultrasonic Scaling and Deep Cleaning Tools

Ultrasonic instruments use gentle vibration and water flow to loosen hardened buildup below the gums. This helps flush bacteria from areas that are difficult to reach with brushing alone.

Our dentists use hand instruments alongside ultrasonic tools to refine surfaces and clean tight spaces. Using both allows us to thoroughly clean while being mindful of your gum comfort.

Dental Scaling Duration and Recovery Time

Appointment length depends on how many areas need attention and how much buildup is present. Some visits are short, others take longer.

After treatment, your gums may feel sore or sensitive for a short time. Most people return to normal routines the same day.

Deep cleaning may take place over one or more visits, depending on how much of your mouth needs treatment. Each section is cleaned fully before moving on.

During the visit, buildup is removed from below the gums and root surfaces are smoothed. Some tenderness afterwards is normal, but many people notice less bleeding and irritation as healing begins.

Gum Healing After Deep Cleaning

Healing happens gradually. Bleeding often decreases within days. Swelling settles as bacteria are removed. Over time, your gums can tighten, and pockets may become shallower.

Follow-up visits and daily home care play an important role in keeping your gums stable after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is scaling and root planing painful?

Local numbing keeps treatment comfortable. Mild soreness afterward is common and temporary.

How is deep cleaning different from a regular dental cleaning?

Can scaling and root planing stop gum disease from getting worse?

Yes. Removing the infection early protects gum tissue and bone support.

How long does scaling and root planing take?

Time depends on how many areas need treatment and how much buildup is present.
